Brazil

In Brazil we offer our support through a project financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The DGRV project in Brazil is part of the Participation, Energy, Welfare – Sustainability with Cooperatives in Latin America (PEB-LA) project, which works in three different areas: cooperatives in rural areas, renewable energy in cooperatives and financial cooperatives. In Brazil the current focus is on renewable energy cooperatives and small rural agricultural groups.

Cooperatives and other forms of associations in rural areas are instruments for the generation of sustainable employment and income for their members, which is why efforts are being made to strengthen their structures and services through the Redes (networks) program. The Redes program addresses issues such as management, governance, participation, market access, etc. and culminates in the establishment of networks, alliances, or cooperative centers. The program is being developed in the north of the country by the counterpart OCB Pará and “SESCOOP Nacional” and by the savings and credit cooperative Sicredi Paranapanema in its area of operation.

The topic of renewable energy production in cooperatives with the participation of citizens includes both cooperatives that are involved in the production and consumption of renewable energy and cooperatives that are active in all economic sectors. The possibility of generating one’s own energy leads to a reduction in energy costs and at the same time contributes to the protection of the environment and the participation of the population in the energy transition.

In this context, the support of initiatives and the collection and dissemination of relevant information, which is available on the project website www.energia.coop, should be emphasized. The exchange of experience between cooperatives that produce and consume renewable energy is actively promoted, as is dialogue with key players at local and national level and cooperation with other Latin American countries. This area of work is being developed in close partnership with the Organization of Brazilian Cooperatives (OCB).

The credit cooperatives in Brazil today have a strong and sustainable structure and a very comprehensive product portfolio, which is why they play an important role at local level and are partners in various project activities.
