Laos is currently facing a difficult economic period. Ongoing inflation and the devaluation of the local currency make life challenging. More than 400,000 Lao people, especially young ones, have already left the country to work abroad.
What one cannot do, many can.
This principle offers a way to face the economic challenges. Young people at the National University of Laos, Agriculture Faculty Na Bong, have formed a Model Student Cooperative, inspiring others to follow their example.
Teachers at various universities nationwide, including in Luang Prabang and Vientiane, are eager to learn more about cooperative principles and empower their students. In a brainstorming meeting, students presented their ideas for forming a Model Student Cooperative to produce compost from leaves and natural rubbish on the Vientiane campus.
Our idea would contribute to stopping burning, especially burning plastics on the campus, and bring a positive impact on the environment and people’s lives,
says Ms. Alounny Sulivongsa, a young, ambitious student, during her presentation.
Mr. Vongsouphanh, the vice dean, aims to attract more young people to select the Faculty of Social Science by offering innovative ideas like the Model Student Cooperative.
We are affected by the current economic situation in Laos too, but we try to do our best by having new ideas and improving ourselves every day to attract students to the Banking Institute. Although the number of students has reduced, compared to others, we can still fulfill our goals for freshmen at our institute,
emphasizes Director Dr. Akhom. He sees the Cooperative Short-Term Course as a chance to attract young people’s interest. DGRV is supporting these efforts.
By forming cooperatives and embracing innovative ideas, young people and educators in Laos are working together to create sustainable solutions that address economic challenges and improve the community.
